Cast-Metal Signs

Cast-Metal Signs explores the history of the signage which is used to advise, to warn, to direct and to advertise. For almost 250 years, the cast-metal sign has been ubiquitous – ranging from small labels fixed to mechanical devices, to large monumental plaques measuring several square feet, and weight several tons – all created  by the skills of the pattern-maker and the foundryman. Millions of plaques and signs, in lead, iron, bronze and numerous alloys can be found all over the world, telling the fascinating story of our industrial and social development.

Cast-iron grave markers date back to the early years of the 17th century, with cast-iron milestones appearing on roads and canals a century later.
