John Hannavy's primary collecting interest is in cased images from the 1840s through to the 1860s – particularly thermoplastic Union Cases. He was responsible for identifying John Smith of Birmingham as the only British maker of these intricately moulded cases so far discovered. A selection of images from his collection was featured in a four-page 'Member's Profile' in the Spring 2012 issue of The Daguerreian Society Quarterly, and a number of other treasures from his collection featured in the 2009/2010 and 2011 Daguerreian Society Annuals.
Case Histories - the Presentation of the Victorian Photographic Portrait 1840-1875 (Antique Collectors' Club 2005) was a major milestone in John's collecting - the book was entirely illustrated with cases and images from his own collection.
Hidden Memories, looking at the history, design and evolution of the Victorian cased photographic portrait appeared in the July/August 2006 issue of Antique Collecting, the journal of the Antique Collectors' Club who published Case Histories.
