John Hannavy's writing and photography has been appearing regularly in a variety of magazines all over the world for forty years. Recently published features have covered locations in the Ukraine, the UK, Spain, Italy, Egypt, America, Portugal and France, in addition to articles on early photography, history through photography, and antique collecting.
Some current editorial projects are listed below.
The Day the Driver's Hat Blew Off looks at preserved steam – trains and boats – on New Zealand's South Island, featuring the 'Kingston Flyer' and the TS Earnslaw, which were both established as part of an integrated Victorian transport system. The feature is scheduled to appear in Vintage Spirit magazine in summer 2009.
Land of the Mountain and the Flood is the working title for a new series of articles looking at Scotlands' mountains, lochs and rivers. The series will explore the importance of Scotland's landscape in defining the people who live there, and will also explore how the mountains, glens and lochs have inspired writers, musicians, thinkers and scientists. The features are appearing in Scotland Magazine the first in May 2009.

In John Thomson's Footsteps John Thomson FRGS was the most prolific travel writer and photographer of his day. In the 1860s and 1870s he travelled extensively through south-east Asia and Cyprus. John Hannavy recreated his journeys through China and Cyprus.

Reaching for the Skies marks John's return to writing about the practice of photography, exploring the huge importance of the sky in establishing the mood and meaning of a photograph. In this article, John Hannavy uses his own landscape and travel photography to underline just how much the 'right sky' can suggest space and distance, define an environment, and influence how a picture is read.

A Lancashire Yarn uses Edwardian postcards to tell the story of
'Lancashire's Great Industry' - cotton. At a time when sending messages
by postcard was as commonplaceas sending text messages is today, publishers were always on the
lookout for new subjects. The Lancashire mill workers proudly posed for
the camera in front of their machines in a step-by-step series of cards
showing how cotton was spun and woven.
From Manchester Docks to Salford Quays On a bitterly cold February morning in 1968, with a severe frost having followed a heavy snowfall, John Hannavy found himself clinging on to the freezing steelwork high up on a crane at Manchester Docks, to take some dramatic pictures for a weekly part-work encyclopaedia. Now, over forty years on, these pictures are history, as are the docks themselves. John has been back to Salford Quays to reflect on the massive changes which have taken place!

in Mary Stuart's France John Hannavy looks at some of the places associated with Mary Queen of Scots' thirteen year stay in France between 1548 and 1561, all of them as Queen of Scotland, and seventeen months also as Queen of France.

Street Markets looks at street markets around the world, and explores
what they say about the people they serve. Locations in Britain, Egypt,
China, Russia, Ukraine, India France, Cyprus, and Egypt combine to offer a colourful picture of the people who buy and sell on the street.

Treasures of a Divided Island explores the unique heritage of the island of Cyprus - both sides of the recently reopened border - the green line - being
host to some of the finest treasures of the Mediterranean. From Kourion
in the south, to Salamis in the north, Cyprus offers so much more than
just fine hotels, sunny beaches, and holiday homes!
